Other than traditional beat-em-up stages, there are a variety of levels that differ from traditional format. The game also allows players to run by double tapping on the D-pad, giving players the ability to perform a charging attack. Using a variety of combos, players can perform special attacks such as grabs, special kicks, or spinning attacks. Players can punch and kick enemies across a variety of levels on the Dark Queen's ship. Gameplay Despite featuring Double Dragon characters, this game is a Battletoads game.īased off of the gameplay of the Battletoads franchise, Battletoads and Double Dragon is a side-scrolling beat-em-up game. Now with the deadly ally of the Shadow Warriors, the Battletoads have to contact the Double Dragons in order to fight the combined forces of their enemies. The antagonist from Battletoads, the Dark Queen, has returned to attempt to take over the galaxy yet again. Starring Billy Lee, Jimmy Lee, Zitz, Pimple, and Rash, Battletoads and Double Dragon's plot is mostly based off of previous Battletoads games. Developed by Rare and published by Tradewest (in North America), Nintendo (in Europe), and Sony Imagesoft (for the SNES and Game Boy version), the game was originally released for the Sega Genesis in February of 1993, and then later ported to the NES, SNES, and Game Boy. Check out the trailer below, and our review later in January.Overview The Ultimate Team subtitle isn't carried by every version of the game.īattletoads/Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team is a crossover game of Technos Japan Corporation's Double Dragon franchise, and Rare's Battletoads franchise. Not much is known other than the release date is January 30th on PlayStation IV and Steam. Co-op is back, and the cast of characters from the 80's and 90's return along with some new adversaries. The game looks to be a hybrid of the first three games, with a heavy focus on Double Dragon II: The Revenge. Arc System Works has purchased the rights to the classic series, and has come up with the first direct sequel in almost 20 years, Double Dragon IV. But now Double Dragon looks to be back to the core gameplay that made it famous. The game featured a more modern setting, updated soundtracks, all new levels and story, and the ability to poke fun at the franchise at a whole. Double Dragon Neon was released on Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in 2012 with a reasonable asking price of $9.99. This was a reimagination of the original arcade game but featured things from the various sequels along with updated graphics. Finally, in 2003 Double Dragon Advance was released for the Game Boy Advance. And this box office bomb of a movie even was adapted into another fighting game for the Neo-Geo system.Īfter that, nothing but silence from this once great franchise for a very long time. The Double Dragon movie starring Robert Patrick, Scott Wolf, and Alyssa Milano was a total flop. In 1994, Double Dragon was transformed into a head-to-head brawler called Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls to capitalize on this new genre and the mediocre animated television series. A little game called Street Fighter II came on the arcade scene, which allowed players to battle each other. These classic titles became focused on a co-operative mode of play, and this formula stayed successful for years. The pinnacle in my opinion was Super Double Dragon for the Super Nintendo system which was an excellent beat'em up showcasing some of the advanced graphical capabilities of the Super Nintendo in it's early years. Everything from the Atari 2600 to the Sega Genesis had some version (good or bad) of Double Dragon to play. Three NES outings and a team up with the Battletoads made for millions of sales for developer Technos Japan, and publisher Tradewest, creating even further adaptations onto Game Boy and other portable systems. This success led to porting the game to almost all platforms available. The original arcade games are famous for tight controls, weapons, and special moves. No one can ignore that Double Dragon was a force to be reckoned with back in the 80's and 90's.
